Groningen experiences rise in electric bike thefts
Multiple electric bicycles were recently stolen in the Vinkhuizen district of Groningen. One incident occurred at the MFC ’t Vinkhuys community center, where two individuals stole two bikes while a course was in progress. A second theft took place a day later at the Platinaflat involving a bicycle without a battery.
These local thefts reflect a broader trend in Groningen, which has become a national leader in the increase of stolen two-wheelers. The municipality has recorded 2,352 registered bicycle and scooter thefts so far this year, an increase of 304 cases compared to the same period last year. This rise significantly outpaces the national increase of 1.56 percent.
Alderman Jalt de Haan stated that the municipality is running a campaign encouraging cyclists to use double locks, noting that ART-approved second locks are effective. Authorities are also working with police and partners to address the rising trend of e-bike battery thefts and to implement more effective countermeasures.
