Groningen province acquires 75 hectares near Liefstinghsbroek

The Province of Groningen has purchased 75 hectares of agricultural land near the Liefstinghsbroek Natura 2000 area. The land, previously owned by a developer with permits for a solar park, will instead be used as exchange land to support a regional area process.

This process aims to reduce nitrogen deposition in the Liefstinghsbroek nature reserve and create space for new permit issuances in the surrounding area. A key component involves the planned relocation of a livestock farm. Once completed, the province expects to resume issuing permits for parts of the area. The initiative also focuses on nature restoration, specifically protecting habitats dependent on seepage water.

The Liefstinghsbroek is a significant nature area located between Vlagtwedde and Jipsinghuizen, containing some of the oldest forest areas in Groningen.
