Groote Schuur Hospital launches upgraded emergency and trauma facilities
Groote Schuur Hospital has officially launched its upgraded Emergency and Trauma Centre, following an investment of approximately R200 million. The project, supported by the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, aims to enhance the hospital's capacity to handle urgent medical and surgical emergencies.
The facility features modern clinical infrastructure, advanced medical technology, and dedicated trauma treatment areas. The Emergency Centre opened in late July, followed by the Trauma Centre in August. To supplement the provincial investment, philanthropic donors via the Groote Schuur Hospital Trust provided essential equipment, including ventilators, ultrasound machines, and digital mobile X-ray units.
According to Provincial Health and Wellness MEC Mireille Wenger, the hospital's Emergency Centre is one of the busiest in Africa, managing between 3,500 and 4,500 patients monthly. The upgrades also include new dedicated waiting areas for families and relatives.
