Groschen Markt insolvency: 22 branches and 80 jobs saved

Buyers have been identified for 22 of the 41 branches of the insolvent retail chain Groschen Markt, allowing approximately 80 of its 170 employees to retain their jobs. The acquisitions are distributed across four eastern German states: ten locations in Thuringia, six in Saxony-Anhalt, four in Saxony, and two in Brandenburg.

Most of the acquired stores will operate under new names or different retail concepts, meaning the Groschen Markt brand will largely disappear from the East German retail landscape. Only three locations in Thuringia are expected to continue using the original brand name. The chain, which specialized in household goods, hardware, stationery, and seasonal products, entered insolvency following financial difficulties faced by its operator, DEC Handelsgesellschaft mbH.

Insolvency administrator Olaf Spiekermann indicated that a further acquisition may occur in November, which could increase the number of preserved locations. While earlier estimates suggested up to 30 stores might be saved, negotiations with investors proved lengthy due to a challenging market environment.
