Grosseto hosts exhibition on Italian realism and Maremma history

The exhibition “Il tempo del realismo” (The Time of Realism) is being held at the Polo Culturale Le Clarisse in Grosseto, running until 2026. The showcase explores the intersection of Italian realist art and the social history of the Maremma region during the 1950s.

The exhibition draws its historical significance from the May 4, 1954, mining explosion at the Ribolla mine's Camorra shaft, which killed 43 miners. This tragedy became a focal point for cultural and literary movements, including the investigative work “I minatori della Maremma” by Luciano Bianciardi and Carlo Cassola.

The display recreates the spirit of a landmark 1955 realist painting exhibition in Grosseto, which aimed to promote an engaged, popular art form for the working classes. Featured artists include Renato Guttuso, Carlo Levi, Carla Accardi, and Achille Perilli. Notable pieces include Carlo Levi’s “Ritratto di Anna Magnani.”
