Italy marks 19th National ALS Day with awareness initiatives

Italy is observing the 19th National ALS Day, organized by the Italian Association of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (AISLA). To raise awareness, hundreds of symbolic locations across the country, including Palazzo Chigi and various municipal buildings, will be illuminated in green.

Medical experts from the Italian Society of Neurology (Sin) highlight that ALS is no longer viewed as a uniform pathology but as a collection of conditions with diverse biological and genetic profiles. This shift is driving the move toward precision medicine, utilizing genetic data, biomarkers, and advanced neuroimaging to create personalized treatment paths. In Italy, approximately 6,800 people live with ALS, with an incidence of about 3 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants annually.

In Calabria, the “Ovunque Vicini” project is utilizing telemedicine to provide specialist care directly to families in their homes, connecting patients with neurologists, nutritionists, and psychologists from across Italy to overcome geographic barriers to healthcare.
