Italy faces urban tree safety risks from weather and pests

Various regions in Italy are facing challenges regarding urban tree management and public safety due to falling trees and biological threats. In Montesilvano, the Conalpa association has raised alarms about the progressive drying of pine trees in the local pinewood, potentially caused by the invasive parasite Toumeyella parvicornis, known as the pine turtle scale.

Severe weather and wind have also caused immediate hazards, with fallen trees blocking roads in Isernia and Tarquinia Lido, requiring intervention from firefighters. In Grosseto, a pine tree uprooted itself near a school and a frequently used park, narrowly avoiding hitting pedestrians.

These incidents have sparked political and administrative debates. In Cassino, opposition members are calling for improved maintenance and leadership changes following tree falls. Meanwhile, municipalities like Merano and Riccione are implementing more structured risk management protocols, such as specialized monitoring and soil aeration projects, to protect their arboreal heritage against the effects of climate change and urban infrastructure constraints.
