Grosseto prison chaplain calls for new facility and institutional action

Don Enzo Capitani, the chaplain of the Grosseto prison, has issued an appeal to local and regional authorities calling for an end to the “silence of indifference” regarding the city's prison conditions. In a letter addressed to parliamentarians, regional councilors, and local mayors, Capitani emphasized that public safety depends not just on control measures, but on effective educational and rehabilitative projects within the prison system.

Capitani is urging concrete action toward the construction of a new penitentiary facility to replace the current inadequate structure. He argues that the current environment is disconnected from the city's life and requires a commitment to the social reintegration of inmates.

The political party Azione Grosseto has responded to the chaplain's appeal, criticizing local and national government institutions for their lack of a clear or concrete position on the matter. The party noted that while the chaplain's words have garnered widespread support, the silence from governing officials is disappointing. Azione further stated that the development of a new prison on via Senese is essential for combating crime and providing necessary resources for inmate recovery and social reintegration.
