Grossmann Villa in Ostrava wins National Heritage Institute award
The restored Grossmann Villa in Ostrava has been awarded the Director General’s Prize by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) at the Patrimonium pro futuro 2026 awards ceremony. The recognition, often referred to as a heritage restoration Oscar, honors the successful revitalization of the Art Deco residence built between 1923 and 1924 for builder František Grossmann.
Originally serving as both a luxury residence and a construction firm office, the building had fallen into significant disrepair after being converted into apartments in the 1940s and later serving as a kindergarten. The comprehensive reconstruction restored the villa’s original layout, architectural details, and color schemes, while the garden was recreated using historical photographs.
The award was accepted by representatives from the city of Ostrava and the company Černá louka. The villa now functions as a cultural and educational center, preserving the architectural integrity of the site for public use.
