Grotta Maria Colombo excavations reveal 3,900-year-old ceramics

Archaeological excavations at Grotta Maria Colombo in Montesano sulla Marcellana have uncovered ceramic fragments dating back approximately 3,900 years to the Early Bronze Age. The August 2026 campaign successfully cleared access to the cave's main chamber, which had been obstructed by mud and debris from a ceiling collapse.

Researchers suggest that the human presence in the cave may have served funerary and cultic purposes. Future research will focus on the detailed study of the recovered ceramics and any remaining bone remains to further understand the prehistoric history of the Vallo di Diano region.
