Grottaglie‑Taranto airport debate intensifies as regional politicians call for unity
The Grottaglie‑Taranto airport, recently upgraded with €9 million of public funds, has become the focus of a heated political dispute in Puglia. Regional PER coordinator Nicola Spinelli urged all institutional actors to adopt a common strategy, describing the facility as a “strategic hub” essential for the area’s development and for showcasing the region during the 2026 Mediterranean Games.
Fratelli d’Italia regional adviser Renato Perrini criticised the Five Star Movement’s recent proposals, calling them “propaganda and slogans” and demanding the immediate release of the public study on the airport’s operations. He also highlighted the need for solid measures and transparent accountability to move the project forward.
Both officials emphasized that cooperation between regional, national and airport authorities is required to fully exploit the airport’s potential and to support the upcoming international sporting event.
