Grottole launches network to connect residents and combat depopulation

The municipality of Grottole has launched the ‘Rete dei Fuorisede’ (Out-of-towners Network), a permanent initiative designed to connect residents who have left the town for work or study, those who have returned, and those who have remained. The project emerged from the ‘Radici in Movimento’ (Roots in Motion) initiative, a co-design process supported by the local administration and led by local youth.

During a recent presentation, the programmatic document ‘Radici in Movimento – Capitolo 1’ was unveiled. Mayor Filippo Carretta and local administrators signed the document, committing to present it to the City Council to ensure institutional continuity. The goal is to create conditions that make returning to Grottole a viable choice while allowing those living elsewhere to remain active members of the community.

The initiative addresses significant demographic shifts in the area. Grottole’s population has declined from 2,606 residents in 2001 to 1,958 by the end of 2024, representing a loss of nearly one-quarter of its inhabitants over two decades.
