Ground beef prices fall only 2% following U.S. beef tariff expansion

A survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) indicates that ground beef prices have seen only a marginal decrease following a federal expansion of beef import quotas. Tracking 80% lean ground beef at 41 grocery stores across 22 states, economists found the average price fell from $7.29 per pound on September 2 to $7.13 on September 23, a 2% drop. This is significantly lower than the 25% reduction encouraged by the federal proclamation.

The Trump Administration increased the tariff-rate quota for lean beef trimmings by approximately 661 million pounds in late August to increase supply and lower consumer costs. However, the AFBF survey noted that 30 of the 41 stores surveyed maintained their September 2 pricing, and only three stores implemented the full 25% reduction.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins addressed concerns regarding rising meat costs, suggesting consumers consider alternative proteins such as chicken, pork, or eggs if beef becomes too expensive. While Rollins noted that beef prices are trending in the right direction, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that uncooked ground beef averaged $7.16 per pound in August, an increase from $6.63 the previous year.
