Ground Zero memorial opens to the public

The 9/11 memorial at Ground Zero has opened to the public following its inauguration during the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks. The site features two granite basins set into the footprints of the former Twin Towers, with waterfalls cascading down their side walls. The names of nearly 3,000 victims are engraved on bronze plates surrounding the basins.

To create a park-like atmosphere amidst the surrounding skyscrapers, 225 two-colored oak trees have been planted, with plans to eventually exceed 400 trees. Due to ongoing construction at the new World Trade Center site, access is currently limited, and visitors are required to register in advance. Priority access is being given to the families of the victims.

A museum dedicated to the history of the September 11 attacks is scheduled to open at the site in August 2012.
