Group 16 rugby league officials battle ongoing referee abuse

Phil Astill, the president of Group 16 rugby league referees, is addressing the ongoing issue of verbal abuse directed at officials during grassroots matches. Astill reported that while player education and collaboration with the NRL and local clubs have improved conditions over the last four years, insults remain a regular occurrence on the field.

Officials currently have the authority to use penalties, sin bins, or send-offs to manage abuse. Astill noted that questioning a referee's integrity can result in significant disciplinary action, citing a previous instance where a player received a 12-week ban.

In addition to on-field player conduct, Astill highlighted the challenge of sideline abuse from coaches, trainers, and parents. Unlike professional leagues, grassroots officiating lacks extensive video review systems, relying instead on the officials and touchline staff to maintain order.
