Growth in Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) market adoption

The market for electrified vehicles is expanding significantly. In Indonesia, data from the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) shows that electrified vehicle distribution reached 175,144 units in 2025, up from 103,228 units in 2024. This growth includes Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV), and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV), with their combined market share rising from 11.9% to approximately 21.8% of total new car distributions.

PHEV technology is seeing notable growth, with units increasing from 136 in 2024 to 5,270 in 2025. This technology offers a middle ground for consumers who want the benefits of electric mobility for daily use while maintaining the flexibility of a conventional engine for long-distance travel or areas with limited charging infrastructure.

Technological distinctions remain important for consumers. Conventional hybrids (HEV) recharge through driving and braking without needing to be plugged in, whereas PHEVs allow for external charging to extend electric-only driving ranges.
