Gruma reports profit decline amid US demand headwinds
Mexican multinational Gruma, a leading producer of corn flour and tortillas, reported an 11% decrease in net profits for the first nine months of 2026, totaling $392.3 million. The company's third-quarter net income fell by 1% to $131.6 million.
Sales volume declined globally, driven largely by consumer belt-tightening and inflation. In the United States, Gruma's second-largest market, sales volume dropped 4% year-over-year. This contraction was primarily attributed to reduced demand in institutional food channels, such as restaurants, and a slight decline in the retail sector.
Regional performance varied: European shipments fell by 6%, while sales volumes in Mexico and the Asia-Pacific region both contracted by 2%. Despite these volume declines, the company saw a 3% year-over-year increase in cumulative revenue, reaching $4.925 billion, as it pivoted toward premium margins to defend profitability.
