Grupa Azoty seeks energy savings through renewables and efficiency

Grupa Azoty is exploring various strategies to reduce energy and gas consumption, including the use of renewable energy sources (RES), heat recovery, and process electrification. Artur Chołody, Vice President of Grupa Azoty, noted that while RES is a key component, it cannot be the sole pillar of the energy mix due to the need for stable supplies in chemical production. The company is analyzing the use of direct lines to power plants from its own sources and considering photovoltaic installations on its extensive land holdings, potentially through partnerships with external investors.

In the broader context of the Polish energy market, analysts suggest that renewable energy sources played a critical role in preventing blackouts during recent extreme heatwaves. While high temperatures increased electricity demand for cooling and caused issues for coal-fired power plants due to river water temperatures, the integration of RES helped stabilize the power system and mitigate the risks associated with aging thermal units.
