Mexico's pan de muerto industry projects 1.034 billion peso season

The Mexican baking industry, represented by the National Chamber of the Baking, Pastry and Similar Industries (CANAINPPA), anticipates that sales of pan de muerto will reach approximately 1.034 billion pesos ($55.59 million) during the 2026 Day of the Dead season.

Julián Castañón, president of CANAINPPA, estimates a national production of 4,545 tons, equivalent to roughly 4.5 million kilograms. The average price is expected to be around 227.50 pesos per kilogram, representing a 2% increase compared to 2025. While traditional sugar-coated versions remain the most popular, there is a growing trend toward filled varieties, such as those containing cream, chocolate, or berry flavors.

The industry, which includes approximately 59,500 establishments and supports over 1.5 million jobs across its supply chain, noted that price fluctuations are driven by labor costs, wages, and the varying costs of raw materials like wheat, sugar, and eggs. The commercial season typically extends from mid-September through early November.
