Grupo Carmin brings ‘A Invenção do Nordeste’ to Recife

The theatrical production ‘A Invenção do Nordeste’ (The Invention of the Northeast) by Grupo Carmin is scheduled for a run at Caixa Cultural Recife from October 15 to 24. Directed by Quitéria Kelly, the play explores the historical construction of identity and the persistent stereotypes associated with the Northeast region of Brazil.

The performance uses humor and documentary theater techniques to investigate how the region is perceived by the rest of the country, particularly in the South and Southeast. The narrative follows a satirical premise where a production company attempts to train actors to perform ‘authentic’ Northeastern characters, highlighting the gap between reality and the expectations of outsiders. Since its debut in 2017, the production has toured 23 Brazilian states and various European cities.
