Grupo Carso purchase of Paseo de San Francisco prompts neutral stance in Puebla's Barrio del Alto

Irving Martínez, president of the Barrio del Alto neighborhood committee in Puebla, said residents are keeping a neutral position while the shopping center Paseo de San Francisco and the former Los Ángeles factory are being bought by Grupo Carso, the conglomerate of Carlos Slim. The community plans to request a meeting with the Ayuntamiento de Puebla and Grupo Carso to obtain details about the planned development.

Local residents also highlighted longstanding problems such as insecurity, insufficient public services, street garbage, lack of lighting and abandoned houses. Rumors circulate that, in addition to the mall, two adjacent parcels – the former Federica Bonilla school and a former factory covering a full block – were acquired, along with about 20 houses. The committee noted past experiences of unfulfilled projects and expressed concerns about possible gentrification, while some inhabitants view the investment as a potential benefit for the area.
