Grupo Mirgor labor conflict escalates with UOM strike
The labor conflict between the Unión Obrera Metalúrgica (UOM) and Grupo Mirgor in Río Grande has escalated following a tense meeting between company executives and workers. Union leaders, including Marcos Linares, reported that the meeting, attended by CEO José Alonso, was marked by high tension and attempts to intimidate staff. The union claims that 25 shop stewards, representing approximately 1,200 workers, remain barred from the plants despite being on paid leave during the mandatory conciliation period.
In response to the situation, the UOM confirmed a general strike for Wednesday starting at 13:00. Union representatives criticized the company's stance and accused the administration of attempting to undermine union representation.
Ushuaia Mayor Walter Vuoto issued an open letter to Grupo Mirgor, urging the company to reopen dialogue and reinstate the affected workers and delegates. Vuoto emphasized that the company's growth was supported by industrial promotion regimes in Tierra del Fuego and carries a responsibility toward the local community and workforce. The mandatory conciliation period is set to expire on August 31.
