Argentina industrial sector faces wave of layoffs and plant closures
Argentina is experiencing a wave of industrial layoffs and plant closures across several sectors. In Tierra del Fuego, Grupo Mirgor dismissed approximately 296 workers from its Einstein and Malvinas plants in Río Grande. This move has triggered labor unrest and prompted the provincial Ministry of Labor to order a 15-day mandatory conciliation period to resolve the conflict.
In the poultry sector, Granja Tres Arroyos dismissed 260 employees from its La China plant in Concepción del Uruguay. The company cited a significant drop in activity caused by avian influenza outbreaks, which restricted access to international markets like China and led to an oversupply in the domestic market.
The textile industry also faces severe contraction, with Will Der S.A. closing its production facilities in Las Flores and General Pacheco, affecting roughly 140 workers. Additionally, Unilever closed its dehydrated vegetable plant in Guaymallén, Mendoza, resulting in the dismissal of 60 workers. The company stated the decision was driven by changing consumer habits and the need to improve structural competitiveness.
