Grupo Muffato opens autonomous supermarket in Curitiba

Grupo Muffato has launched MGO, a highly automated supermarket in the Centro Cívico neighborhood of Curitiba, Brazil. Representing a significant investment of R$ 10 million, the store is described by the group as the largest fully autonomous retail operation in Latin America.

The facility utilizes advanced technology to facilitate a “grab and go” shopping experience. The infrastructure includes 587 4K resolution cameras and 817 sensor-equipped shelves that work alongside artificial intelligence and computer vision to identify products. This system automatically populates a virtual basket as customers select items, including produce, vegetables, and bakery goods, eliminating the need for manual weighing or labeling.

Customers can shop without a prior registration or specific app. Those using the mobile application can have charges debited directly to a registered card, while others can pay at exit totems using Pix, credit cards, or meal vouchers. The technology powering the store was developed by the Portuguese company Sensei.
