Grupo Pontal-Thopen files for judicial recovery with R$ 4.56 billion debt

Grupo Pontal-Thopen has filed for judicial recovery in Rio de Janeiro, reporting a total debt of R$ 4.56 billion. The company, which operates distributed generation assets and participates in the free energy market, made the request to the 6th Business Court after collective negotiations with creditors failed.

The group's liabilities include R$ 2.29 billion in voting debt, mostly unsecured credits, and R$ 2.27 billion in intercompany debts. The financial collapse is attributed to a mismatch between the operational start dates of generation projects and the maturity of financing debts. Additional contributing factors include high Selic interest rates, which increased borrowing costs, and delays by energy distributors in connecting completed plants to the electrical grid.

Industry observers, including Náchila Oliveira of EcoPower, note that while the crisis raises concerns regarding market perception of solar technology, it highlights the necessity of responsible management and operational stability within the renewable energy sector.
