Italy waste management sector faces need for industrial aggregation
At a recent conference in Milan, industry leaders discussed the critical need for aggregation in Italy's waste management and urban hygiene sectors. Executives from Gruppo CAP, including President Yuri Santagostino and General Manager Michele Falcone, emphasized that overcoming market fragmentation is essential to attract the large-scale investments required for circular economy infrastructure. Santagostino noted that industrial aggregation is necessary to manage public services effectively, citing the group's recent acquisitions and investments in waste-to-energy and sludge treatment plants.
Data presented at the event highlighted Italy's strong performance in the circular economy, with a material circularity rate of 21.6% in 2024, significantly exceeding the EU average of 12.2%. Despite this, the sector faces challenges due to low investment levels compared to Germany and France, and a highly concentrated revenue structure where the top 5% of companies generate nearly half of the sector's turnover.
In a separate development, the Italian Exhibition Group (IEG) announced the launch of Bex – Beyond Exploration Expo. CEO Corrado Peraboni stated the event aims to bridge the gap between the space economy and terrestrial industries, facilitating the exchange of technologies between the two sectors.
