GS1 Italy research highlights accessibility gaps in retail
A new study conducted by GS1 Italy, in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano and 18 consumer goods companies, reveals that accessibility remains a fragmented priority within the large-scale retail sector. The research examines how prepared the industry is to meet the needs of individuals with physical, sensory, or cognitive limitations.
Findings indicate that of the 15 companies analyzed in the strategic assessment, only three have established accessibility as a central organizational pillar. While six others consider the issue, they have not assigned it a central role, and six have yet to integrate it into their corporate strategies. Barriers to progress include organizational and cultural obstacles, a lack of shared standards, and the absence of dedicated governance.
To address these challenges, initiatives are being implemented to improve the shopping experience. GS is working on the “Ore di quiete” project, which utilizes dimmed lighting and reduced music to support neurodivergent individuals and those with sensory hypersensitivity. Additionally, Coop Alleanza 3.0 highlighted its “Ausilio per la spesa” service, which provides free home delivery to elderly people and those with motor difficulties, a network that currently involves approximately 500 points of service.
