GS25 convenience store history and brand philosophy
GS25, a leading South Korean convenience store chain, originated in December 1990 as LG25 under Heesung Industries, a subsidiary of the Lucky-Goldstar (later LG) Group. The first store opened in Hoegi-dong, Seoul.
A major corporate restructuring in 2005 led to the separation of the retail division from LG. While the Koo family maintained the LG brand for electronics and chemicals, the Huh family established GS Group. Consequently, LG Retail became GS Retail, and the convenience store chain rebranded as GS25.
The name GS25 reflects both the parent company, GS Group, and a service philosophy. The number 25 represents the concept of going ‘beyond 24 hours,’ symbolizing a commitment to providing service and value that exceeds customer expectations. In 2019, the brand underwent a repositioning to transition from a traditional retailer into a ‘Lifestyle Platform’ integrating technology and various life services.
