GSA Administrator seeks to address $50 billion in federal building maintenance backlog

Ed Forst, Administrator of the General Services Administration (GSA), has reported significant deterioration in federal government buildings, citing issues such as collapsing concrete ceilings, exposed wiring, and standing water. The GSA estimates that there is $50 billion in delinquent maintenance across the government’s real estate portfolio.

Forst noted that no federal agency met the required 60 percent agency-wide occupancy level in recent data submissions. To address the decay, the GSA is leading a coalition of cabinet agencies and federal leaders to advocate for increased access to the Federal Buildings Fund (FBF).

The coalition is seeking to raise the spending threshold for projects requiring formal House and Senate committee approval from $3.96 million to $75 million. Currently, the approval process for projects exceeding the existing threshold can take over 400 days.
