GSA and HHS flag $1.22 billion in suspected COVID contract fraud
The General Services Administration (GSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have identified $1.22 billion in suspected fraud involving five COVID-era contracts. The discovery was made under the direction of the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, led by Vice President JD Vance.
Officials have suspended payments on these contracts, noting that approximately 93 percent of the funds had not yet been distributed. The GSA stated that these contracts continued to disburse money after the COVID-19 national emergency ended in 2023 and after emergency acquisition flexibilities had been canceled.
The agencies are currently reviewing the findings to determine which cases should be referred to law enforcement. The administration has indicated it will pursue the recovery of taxpayer funds and implement stricter safeguards to prevent future occurrences. No criminal charges have been announced at this time.
