GSEE defends unemployment benefits and calls for collective bargaining
The General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) has issued a statement criticizing recent public debates regarding unemployment benefits. The confederation argues that such discussions distract from essential labor market issues, including the strengthening of free collective bargaining, job quality, safety, and the protection of vulnerable workers.
GSEE emphasizes that unemployment benefits are an insurance-based, reciprocal right funded by worker contributions rather than a handout or charity. The organization rejects the notion that benefits act as a disincentive for employment, suggesting that the responsibility for labor market malfunctions is being unfairly shifted onto workers.
Citing data from DYPA for June 2026, the confederation highlighted a significant gap in protection. Out of 672,293 registered unemployed individuals, only 106,727 received benefits during the month. Furthermore, 54.8% of those registered were classified as long-term unemployed, having been out of work for 12 months or more. GSEE notes that Greece continues to lag behind in terms of access, income protection levels, and the duration of unemployment insurance.
