Greece: Pay regulations for October 28 public holiday

The General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) has released guidelines regarding employee compensation for the upcoming October 28 public holiday, which falls on a Wednesday in 2026. Under Law 4808/2021, October 28 is a mandatory holiday where most commercial businesses are prohibited from operating.

For businesses that remain closed, employees on a five-day work week paid by daily wage are entitled to an additional day's pay, while monthly salaried employees receive their regular salary. For those on a seven-day work week, daily wage earners receive their proportional daily wage (totaling six days for the week), and monthly salaried employees receive their regular monthly pay.

In businesses legally permitted to operate on holidays, employees working on October 28 are entitled to a 75% pay increase. For daily wage earners, this is calculated based on their legal hourly rate. For monthly salaried employees, the increase is calculated as 1/25 of their legal monthly salary for the hours worked. In cases where businesses that typically close operate due to an emergency under legal provisions, salaried employees receive an additional 1/25 of their salary, and daily wage earners receive an extra day, both with the 75% holiday increase applied.
