GSK introduces Blenrep treatment for multiple myeloma in Spain
GSK has announced that belantamab mafodotina, marketed under the name ‘Blenrep’, has been available in Spain since August. It is the first antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) used in combination against the B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA) for patients with multiple myeloma following their first relapse.
Described by the pharmaceutical company as a ‘Trojan horse’ immunotherapy, the drug enters cancer cells to release a lethal molecule that destroys them from within while minimizing damage to healthy cells. The treatment can be administered on an outpatient basis in day hospitals.
In Spain, the incidence of multiple myeloma is estimated at 2.5 to 3.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, resulting in approximately 3,000 new diagnoses annually. The European Commission authorized the drug based on superior efficacy results from the phase III DREAMM-7 and DREAMM-8 clinical trials.
