GST Council meeting likely postponed to October 7

The 57th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council, originally scheduled for September 12, is expected to be postponed to October 7 in New Delhi. The rescheduling is reportedly due to a conflict with the BRICS Leaders’ Summit, which is set to take place on September 12-13.

Preparatory meetings for GST officials are slated for October 5 and October 6. While an official notification has not yet been released, sources indicate the council will address several critical pending issues, including input tax credit (ITC) restrictions, tax refunds, and GST compliance.

Potential discussion topics include addressing accumulated credits caused by inverted duty structures and streamlining the GST registration process for large taxpayers. This meeting marks the first session of the Council since the major tax slab rationalization implemented in September 2025.
