GST Council to focus on procedural reforms in October meeting
The upcoming GST Council meeting scheduled for October 7 is expected to focus on procedural reforms rather than significant changes to tax rates. According to Ministry of Finance sources, the council aims to review the implementation of rate rationalization conducted over the past year and address operational challenges.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has indicated that the meeting will prioritize ‘GST 2.0’ initiatives, including improvements to e-invoicing and input tax credit regulations. The government is also seeking industry input on addressing systemic discrepancies.
Future tax policy discussions are expected to cover complex emerging issues such as taxation on artificial intelligence, robotics, the gig economy, virtual digital assets, and the classification of digital transactions as either goods or services to provide greater clarity for cross-border operations.
