GTA 6 ranks eighth in Japanese most anticipated games survey
Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) is seeing a divergence in reception between Western and Japanese markets. According to a weekly survey by the Japanese magazine Famitsu, the highly anticipated title ranked eighth among most anticipated games in Japan. The top seven titles in the survey were all developed by Japanese studios and leaned toward the role-playing genre, including Pokémon Winds & Waves and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
In contrast to the massive hype in the West, where leaked gameplay videos and a collaboration with Netflix have fueled intense interest, Japanese gamers appear to prioritize domestic titles. This cultural gap in gaming preferences has been noted in various academic studies.
Meanwhile, Stefan Hayhaus, a brand manager for Gamescom, noted that while massive releases like GTA 6 act as 'polar stars' for the industry, they do not overshadow the broader gaming landscape indefinitely. He remarked that while GTA 6 content may draw attention away from Gamescom temporarily, most gamers maintain diverse interests across hundreds of different titles.
