GTB Council Highlights Black Sea and Hormuz Tensions Threatening Global Grain Trade

The Grain Trade Board (GTB) held its July ordinary council meeting in Gaziantep, where President Ahmet Tiryakioğlu warned that the Russia‑Ukraine war’s impact now extends beyond production to ports, commercial vessels and international trade routes. He said attacks in the Black Sea and the Strait of Hormuz jeopardise global grain supplies and could push food‑price inflation, especially for import‑dependent African nations.

GTB board member Mehmet Akıncı noted the Turkish Grain Market Office’s record purchase of 8.3 million tonnes of grain from 176 000 producers since 21 May, and highlighted the Mediterranean commodity market’s rise to third place. He also discussed the upcoming pistachio harvest in Gaziantep, stressing its economic importance for the region.
