gThumb 4.0 released with GTK4 and LibAdwaita port

The open source image viewer and organizer gThumb has released version 4.0, featuring a major rewrite using GTK4 and LibAdwaita. This port provides a modern native experience for GNOME desktops, including improved UI rendering, better animation, and integration with the GNOME native file chooser.

Key functional updates include support for animated WebP and PNG images, as well as the ability to save images in the JPEG XL (.jxl) format. The image editor has been enhanced with a new censor tool for blurring or mosaicking specific areas and allows users to adjust the intensity of various filters.

Navigation and usability improvements include touchpad support for two-finger swiping and pinch-to-zoom, as well as support for mouse side-buttons. While several features like web albums, contact sheets, and the duplicate finder tool have been removed, the update introduces faster resizing algorithms for large images and improved video metadata display.

Version 4.0 is currently available in the repositories for Fedora 45 and Ubuntu 26.10. An unofficial PPA has also been created for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.
