GTO revival: Episode 6 explores student transformation

The modern revival of the classic Japanese school drama ‘GTO’ continues with its sixth episode, focusing on the character Itsuki Fukuda, played by Fuga Shibasaki. In this installment, the high-achieving student challenges the teaching methods of Eikichi Onizuka, portrayed by Takashi Sorimachi, by requesting a change in instructors through a class vote.

Following a personal crisis involving his grandmother, Fukuda experiences a shift in perspective after Onizuka provides direct, hands-on support that transcends the efficiency of AI or traditional academic instruction. This interaction leads Fukuda to reconsider his cynical view of educators and ultimately decide to return to his original class.

In an interview, Shibasaki discussed the audition process, noting that he was initially asked to leave early, only to later discover he was selected because he perfectly matched the image of the character. He also reflected on the experience of working alongside Sorimachi and the guidance provided by director Kento Matsuda.
