GTO revival sees viewership drop to 1% range

The recent revival of the drama series ‘GTO’, starring Takashi Sorimachi, has seen a significant decline in viewership. After its premiere, individual viewership ratings have steadily dropped, falling into the 1% range by the sixth episode.

This marks a sharp contrast to the original 1998 series, which achieved an average household viewership of 28.5%. Observers note that the protagonist, Onizuka, has transitioned from a rule-breaking, unconventional figure to a more mild-mannered character who often acts to restrain the outbursts of younger colleagues, such as the character played by Meru Nukumi.

While some viewers appreciate this more mature portrayal, others express disappointment that the character's signature unpredictability has diminished. The decline in attention may also be attributed to strong competition from other programs, such as TBS’s ‘VIVANT’ season two and ‘T-shirt ga Kawaku Made’.
