Guachochi lawmakers urge federal action on road repairs and eye‑care services

Members of the permanent delegation of the Chihuahua State Congress gathered in Guachochi and asked the federal government, via the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, to allocate funds for repairing the federal Nonoava‑Guachochi highway. They highlighted severe pavement damage, deep potholes, sinkholes and destroyed sections that have caused dangerous driving conditions, up to 20 flat‑tire incidents per week and more than ten fatalities in the past year. The road serves over 200 daily vehicles, including public transport, family cars and heavy‑load trucks, and its deterioration hampers local commerce, tourism and urgent medical transport.

The same legislators also pressed the state health, education and sports secretariats to install permanent or semi‑permanent visual‑health modules in the municipality of Guachochi, especially in the rural and indigenous communities of the Sierra Tarahumara. They cited data showing that visual problems affect more than 71,000 residents and contribute to up to 30% of school failure, with 20‑30% of children suffering refractive errors. Limited access to ophthalmologists and optometrists leaves many children without timely diagnosis, despite 70% of pediatric blindness being preventable with early eye exams.
