Guadalajara Council rejects Canal de Isabel II water concession

The Provincial Council of Guadalajara has approved an eleven-point motion expressing formal opposition to a request by Canal de Isabel II for a concession of 50 cubic hectometers of water annually from the Sorbe reservoir.

The motion, presented by the Socialist Group (PSOE), urges the Tagus Hydrographic Confederation (CHT) to deny the request and instead increase water flow concessions for the Mancomunidad de Aguas del Sorbe (MAS), as well as the Campiña Baja and La Muela water associations. The council argues that priority must be given to the current and future supply needs of the 44 municipalities served by the MAS, which includes areas in the Henares Corridor and Alcalá de Henares.

The proposal passed with votes from the PSOE, while the PP and Vox groups voted against it. Representatives from the PP accused the motion of being a political maneuver intended to incite a “water war” and create territorial conflict, while Vox representatives suggested the core issue is not the destination of the water, but the risk of granting more water than can be safely guaranteed.
