Guadalajara water protests erupt in violence and arson

A massive protest in Guadalajara, Jalisco, demanding clean water and justice for previous police repression turned violent on October 18, 2026. While organizers and many citizens intended for a peaceful demonstration, groups of masked individuals reportedly infiltrated the march, leading to widespread vandalism and arson.

Key government buildings, including the Jalisco Congress, the Government Palace, and the Judiciary, were targeted with Molotov cocktails and explosives, causing fires and property damage. Governor Pablo Lemus condemned the violence but noted that five individuals were detained in a stolen vehicle containing gasoline canisters.

The underlying crisis involves widespread reports of contaminated, foul-smelling water affecting numerous neighborhoods in the Guadalajara metropolitan area. Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, speaking at the Morelia International Film Festival, expressed strong support for the protesters, describing the water situation as “absolutely unsustainable, indecipherable, and terrifying.”

This event follows a previous protest on October 11 that resulted in 39 detentions and allegations of excessive force by police, which has led to ongoing investigations into 17 officers.
