Guadalajara launches first Social Welfare butcher shop pilot

A pilot "Carnicería Social del Bienestar" opened on Thursday in a Super ISSSTE store in the Parque San Jacinto area of Guadalajara. The shop sells beef, pork and chicken cuts at discounts of 30‑50 percent, using a model that eliminates middlemen, offers freezers on loan and supplies meat on consignment to small retailers.

The initiative is a joint effort of the Consejo Agroalimentario de Jalisco, the federal secretariats of Economy and Agriculture, and producers from the Los Altos region. Three supplier companies provide pre‑packaged, frozen, traceable meat. The pilot aims to reach about 100 points of sale – including public‑transport stations, ejido houses, tortillerías and neighborhood stores – within three months, with a view to expanding the model to other Pacific‑corridor states.
