Guadalcanal road safety works face sign vandalism

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) is progressing with the installation of speed humps along the Henderson–Mberande Road in Guadalcanal Province. These works are being conducted under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), with construction carried out by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

The project aims to improve road safety and traffic management, particularly in areas where motorists must reduce speed to protect pedestrians and nearby communities. In addition to the humps, road signs are being installed to provide advance warning of changes in road conditions.

However, the MID has reported that several newly installed road signs have been vandalized, damaged, or removed. Permanent Secretary Mike Qaqara emphasized that these signs are essential safety infrastructure and warned that their removal creates unnecessary risks for all road users. He has appealed to local communities to take ownership of the infrastructure and report any acts of vandalism to the relevant authorities.
