Guadalquivir River activists demand halt to mining runoff

The association ‘Salvemos el Guadalquivir’ is organizing a protest in Seville on October 17 to demand a moratorium on mining runoff from the Aznalcóllar and Gerena mines into the Guadalquivir estuary.

The group is calling for the establishment of a commission composed of scientists and experts to evaluate potential risks to the river's water quality and sediment. The association is coordinating with several local governments, including Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Trebujena, Chipiona, Coria del Río, Lebrija, and Los Palacios, as well as economic groups dependent on the health of the estuary.

The Sanlúcar de Barrameda City Council has expressed support for the association and has filed a complaint with the Environmental Prosecutor's Office regarding the mining discharges.
