Guadalquivir River health study and thriving Valencia Posidonia meadow highlight Spain's water ecosystems
A comprehensive study of the Guadalquivir River, from its source in the Sierra de Cazorla to the Atlantic, found overall good water quality using standard indicators. However, a pioneering analysis of the river's microbiome detected signs of environmental stress that conventional tests missed, suggesting a new approach for monitoring aquatic ecosystem health.
In the Mediterranean off the coast of Valencia, divers from the Association for the Recovery and Conservation of Archaeology at Sea (ARCAM) and the Cullera town council documented a Posidonia oceanica meadow near the beach of Brosquil. The seagrass beds, located 6–9 m deep, were assessed as being in excellent condition, a rare finding in the region and an important indicator of marine ecological health.
