Guadalquivir River mining discharges spark environmental protests

Environmental groups, including Ecologistas en Acción and Greenpeace, have called for a protest in Seville on October 17 to demand a moratorium on new mining-related discharges into the Guadalquivir River. The mobilization aims to address concerns regarding the impact of these discharges on the river's estuary, the Doñana area, and local economic sectors such as fishing, agriculture, and tourism.

Protesters are calling for the establishment of an independent scientific committee to evaluate the potential effects of these discharges. A central point of controversy is the reopening of the Aznalcóllar mine, following authorization by the Junta de Andalucía in May 2025. Local leaders from Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Chipiona have also joined calls to halt new mining discharges until scientific assessments are completed.
