Guadeloupe amateur sports face crisis amid league liquidations
Amateur sports in Guadeloupe are facing a severe crisis characterized by the disappearance of sports leagues and a continuous decline in registered members. In 2026, the archipelago saw the liquidation of two major leagues by the commercial court: the football league in March and the swimming league in July. Both organizations left behind significant debts.
Financial difficulties are attributed to what officials describe as “haphazard” management, including unreasonable payroll costs and poor administrative habits. These issues are compounded by structural costs related to the territory's insularity, such as high transportation expenses for competitions between Guadeloupe, Martinique, and mainland France.
The rising costs of club memberships, combined with high poverty rates in the region, have made participation difficult for many families. Other sports, including handball, basketball, and judo, are also experiencing financial strain and organizational challenges.
