Guadeloupe implements price caps on automobile maintenance

The ‘Bouclier Qualité Prix’ (BQP) initiative in Guadeloupe has been expanded to include automotive services, marking the first time the price-capping mechanism has been applied to service sectors rather than just goods. Following previous implementations in the food and tools sectors, the new measure targets vehicle maintenance to alleviate the cost-of-living burden on households.

Effective immediately across 53 workshops in the archipelago, the agreement sets maximum prices for one year. For gasoline-powered vehicles, oil changes are capped at 145 euros, while full maintenance services are capped at 270 euros. The agreement involves a broad range of professionals, including car dealerships, independent mechanics, and specialized service centers, covering approximately 55% of the local vehicle fleet, specifically targeting city cars and mid-range models.

Consumer advocacy groups, such as the Zauban union of consumer associations, have welcomed the initiative as a significant step for households heavily dependent on vehicles. However, representatives have signaled they will maintain close oversight to monitor the implementation and ensure compliance with the agreed-upon price ceilings.
